Three Malaysian students arrested after viral video allegedly shows school assault

MALAYSIA: Three secondary school students have been arrested in Malaysia after a video allegedly showing them assaulting a schoolmate went viral online, prompting a police investigation into the incident.

Ampang Jaya police chief Azam Ismail said the incident occurred at around 12.30 pm at Sri Nilam flats in Ampang, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city.

Police said initial investigations found that the assault was allegedly triggered by claims that the victim had disturbed the girlfriend of one of the suspects.

Student allegedly assaulted after being led to location

According to police, the victim was allegedly taken to the location by another student before being assaulted by three suspects.

Azam said the suspects allegedly slapped the victim in the face and kicked him in the body.

He added that all individuals involved were below 18 years old and attended the same school.

The incident was recorded by another student before the footage was circulated through a WhatsApp group and later uploaded to Facebook.

Investigation launched after viral video

Police are investigating the case under Section 147 of the Malaysian Penal Code for rioting and Section 507B for bullying-related offences.

Authorities have not released the identities of the students involved.

The case is the latest school-related assault incident in Malaysia to draw public attention after footage of alleged bullying incidents circulated online.

Previous viral bullying cases

In June 2026, authorities in Sabah investigated a viral video allegedly showing a student being bullied at a school in the state’s interior.

The footage, which circulated online on 23 June 2026, appeared to show a student being pulled by the hair and led towards a restroom area.

The exact date and circumstances of the incident were not confirmed by authorities.

Tenom district police chief Superintendent Azmir Abd Razak confirmed that a police report had been received and that investigations were ongoing.

Sabah Education Department director Datuk Raisin Saidin also confirmed that the department was aware of the case and was awaiting further details.

In another case in May 2026, seven secondary school students in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, were detained to assist investigations into a viral video allegedly showing a female student being bullied.

Police said six female students and one male student, aged between 15 and 17, were involved, with the male student believed to have recorded the incident.

That case was investigated under Sections 147 and 506 of the Malaysian Penal Code for rioting and criminal intimidation.

Separately, four 14-year-old boys were arrested in July 2026 after a teenage boy was allegedly assaulted at a residential complex in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

Police said the victim sustained serious injuries and that a video of the incident was circulated through WhatsApp.

Authorities later seized a mobile phone believed to have been used to record the assault.

The case was investigated under Section 325 of the Malaysian Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

Authorities continue investigations

Police have repeatedly said investigations into viral bullying cases are ongoing and that evidence, including video recordings and witness statements, will be examined.

Education authorities have also previously stated that violence involving students would not be tolerated and that they would cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

In the Ampang case, police have not disclosed further details on the victim’s condition or whether additional arrests will be made.
