16-year-old lifeguard praised after rescuing boy swept into rough California surf

A 16-year-old lifeguard has been widely praised after rescuing a young boy from rough surf at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California, in a dramatic incident captured on video that has since attracted millions of views online.

According to NBC Bay Area, the rescue unfolded after a boy, believed to be around 10 years old, was overwhelmed by rapidly changing surf conditions and swept into the water.

The teenager rushed into the surf, held onto the child and attempted to bring him back to shore as both were repeatedly battered by large waves.

Other swimmers tried to assist before a second lifeguard reached the pair.

Witness describes sudden change in conditions

Witness Scott Vander Dussen, who recorded the rescue, told NBC Bay Area the ocean conditions appeared relatively normal before the situation changed within moments.

"The waves, I wouldn't say they were tranquil, but they were what you'd expect, a normal cadence and intensity," he said.

"And then that just changed in a heartbeat. It caught a lot of people off-guard. Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment's time."

Vander Dussen said he was relieved the rescue ended safely and believed the child may not have survived if lifeguards had not been present.

Local reports stated that the boy was evaluated by paramedics at the scene before being released to his parents.

Officials did not discuss the individual lifeguard's training but said Santa Cruz lifeguards are required to complete at least 56 hours of lifeguard instruction, 24 hours of medical certification training and more than 80 hours of marine safety lifeguard training before serving on patrol.

Video draws widespread praise

Footage of the rescue circulated widely on social media, showing the teenage lifeguard repeatedly disappearing beneath powerful waves while refusing to let go of the child.

According to Fox News, witnesses said the struggle lasted significantly longer than the viral clip suggests, with multiple beachgoers also attempting to enter the water but struggling against the surf.

The teenager ultimately brought the boy safely back to shore.

Fox News reported that a woman identifying herself as the teenager's mother said on social media that the lifeguard's name is Ryder.

She thanked people for their support, writing: "I am blown away by the love, kindness, gratitude and respect you're sending his way!"

She added that several people had asked whether a GoFundMe campaign would be created, but said her son was simply "doing the job that he absolutely loves."

Instead of fundraising for Ryder, she encouraged supporters to donate to the Santa Cruz County Parks Department's Junior Guards programme, where she said he and many fellow lifeguards received their early training before becoming qualified beach lifeguards.

Calls for recognition

Ryder's mother also argued that lifeguards should be recognised as first responders because of the hazardous surf conditions they regularly face along the Santa Cruz coastline.

The rescue also attracted attention from public figures.

Eric Trump shared the video on social media, writing: "Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor. This is truly the best of America! Well done!"
