Amos Yee set to plead guilty over National Service offences on 7 September

Singaporean blogger Amos Yee is set to plead guilty on 7 September to three offences linked to his National Service (NS) obligations, according to court records.

The guilty plea was fixed before Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan following a pre-trial conference held on 24 July 2026, state media CNA reported.

Such pre-trial hearings are conducted in chambers, meaning members of the public and the media are not allowed to attend.

Yee, 27, was first charged in March with three offences connected to his NS obligations.

The charges concern allegations that he failed to report for pre-enlistment medical screening and left Singapore without valid exit permits during specified periods.

Charges linked to NS obligations

Yee is accused of failing to report for pre-enlistment medical screening over a period of more than nine years, from 26 April 2016 to 19 March 2026.

He is also accused of leaving Singapore without valid exit permits during two periods.

The first period ran from 13 December 2015 to 19 April 2016, while the second ran from 15 December 2016 to 19 March 2026.

Yee is currently on bail of S$10,000. He is represented by Divanan Narkunan.

According to CNA, under the current circumstances, Yee will not be charged again in military court or face detention barracks for the same offences for which he was charged in criminal court.

He will, however, have to serve NS.

Yee's departure from Singapore

Yee left Singapore for the United States in 2016 after being jailed twice over remarks he made about Christians and Muslims.

He was granted asylum in the United States in 2017.

He was later charged in the US with possessing child pornography and grooming a minor. Yee pleaded guilty in December 2021 and was sentenced to six years in jail.

Halfway through his backdated sentence, Yee was granted parole. He was subsequently taken back into custody after violating parole conditions.

In November 2025, Yee was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement after being released on parole from the Danville Correctional Center in Illinois.

He was deported to Singapore in March 2026.

Possible penalties for NS defaulters

NS defaulters can be jailed for up to three years, fined up to S$10,000, or face both penalties for each charge.

Yee's scheduled guilty plea will take place against the background of his return to Singapore and the criminal proceedings over his NS obligations.

Separately, Yee was allegedly assaulted by 18-year-old Bosco Chun Ho Wang at an anime convention in May.

Chun was charged with public nuisance and voluntarily causing hurt. His case is currently at the pre-trial conference stage.

The assault allegation and the charges against Chun are separate from the proceedings concerning Yee's NS obligations.
