15-year-old teen held after deadly Seattle festival shooting as police probe possible gang link

A 15-year-old has been ordered held in juvenile detention in connection with the fatal shooting at Seattle's Bite of Seattle food festival, as investigators examine whether the gunfire was linked to gang activity.

The shooting unfolded on Sunday (26 July 2026) evening at Seattle Center during the annual food festival, killing three people and injuring four others, including a two-year-old child.

According to NBC News, prosecutors allege the teenager was involved in a gunfight with a 19-year-old man who died at the scene, while police are also searching for a possible third person believed to have been involved.

Investigation focuses on multiple shooters

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson said investigators now believe at least two people exchanged gunfire outside the Seattle Center Armory.

"One is in custody, and a second has been identified as the 19-year-old deceased man," Wilson said during a Monday news conference.

She added that investigators will examine surveillance footage, analyse bullet casings and follow up on public tips to establish exactly what happened and determine whether additional suspects were involved.

Police continue to search for a possible third suspect.

Possible gang connection under investigation

Nicole Powell, assistant chief of investigations with the Seattle Police Department, said authorities believe the shooting could be gang-related.

"At this point, we believe this could be gang-related. There were two groups firing," Powell said.

Officials described the 15-year-old and the deceased 19-year-old as "associates", although investigators have not released further details about their relationship.

Prosecutors outline allegations

According to court documents cited by NBC News, a police officer positioned less than 100 feet away allegedly saw the 15-year-old holding a handgun and firing into the crowd.

The teenager was taken into custody shortly after the shooting.

Prosecutors said he is being held on suspicion of three counts of first-degree assault and one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

King County Superior Court Judge Tanya Thorp granted prosecutors' request to hold the teenager in juvenile detention.

Prosecutors are expected to receive further details of the police investigation before deciding on formal charges.

King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office spokesperson Casey McNerthney said the teenager had no previous criminal cases in the county.

Victims identified

The King County Medical Examiner identified the three people killed as 19-year-old Junior Cee Niko Semo, who died from multiple gunshot wounds, 56-year-old Ashley Whitehead, who died from a gunshot wound to the pelvis, and 44-year-old Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, who died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

Officials said four other victims remained in stable condition.

According to court documents, officers found three victims in the direction the teenager was alleged to have fired, including a two-year-old child and a person who had been pushing a bicycle.

Investigation continues

The shooting took place during the Bite of Seattle food festival, one of Seattle Center's largest annual events, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Videos of the shooting circulated widely on social media following the incident, prompting renewed discussion over gun violence in the United States.

Authorities have not announced a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing as police continue searching for a possible third suspect.
