Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 opens for entries, adds Immersive category
The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027, now in its fifth year, is open for free entries. The competition introduces a new Immersive category presented by Meta, alongside five existing categories.

The 2027 edition of the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards has opened for submissions, with entry free for all filmmakers via sonyfuturefilmmakerawards.com.
Now in its fifth year, the programme was established by Creo in partnership with Sony to identify exceptional filmmakers at their breakthrough point and connect them directly with the industry. This year, the Awards introduce a new Immersive category, presented by Meta, celebrating bold, experiential storytelling.
Shortlisted filmmakers will be flown to Los Angeles to take part in an exclusive industry programme running from 7 to 10 June 2027 at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, culminating in a gala ceremony on 10 June 2027.
Across four days of sessions and masterclasses led by Sony Pictures executives, shortlisted filmmakers will be immersed in Hollywood's inner workings. Topics span production, film acquisition, working with press and publicists, technology demonstrations, animation techniques and soundtracking.
The programme is intended to help filmmakers forge connections with industry leaders and fellow creators, joining a network of international filmmakers while sharpening their craft.
For 2027, the Immersive category, presented by Meta, welcomes short films that place audiences inside the story using 3D, 180° or 360° video. The category is open to any genre, fiction or non-fiction, live-action or animation, and is intended to give filmmakers a space to explore the creative potential of immersive formats.
Filmmakers may submit short films across six categories.
The Fiction category seeks narrative-led entries conveying an original fictional story or event, between five and 20 minutes long. A winner, chosen from a shortlist of 10 filmmakers, will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device and a US$5,000 cash prize.
The Non-Fiction category is open to predominantly factual films of the same length. Its winner, also chosen from a shortlist of 10, will receive the same prize package.
The Immersive category requires entries to use one or more of the three immersive formats, running five to 20 minutes. One winner will be selected from a shortlist of up to two, receiving a Meta VR device and a US$5,000 cash prize.
The Animation category accepts films of two to 20 minutes using techniques including stop-motion, motion graphics, computer animation, drawn-on-film, rotoscoping and experimental animation. A winner, chosen from a shortlist of five, will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device and a US$5,000 cash prize.
The Student category is open to filmmakers studying a film course at diploma or degree level worldwide, with shortlisted institutions selected by continent to ensure diverse global representation. Entries must run five to 20 minutes. The winner and their institution will each receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, with the winner also receiving a Meta VR device.
The Future Format category challenges entrants to respond to a technical brief. This year's brief calls for shorts created specifically for vertical viewing, in a 9:16 aspect ratio, running two to five minutes and shot on any device. Selected from up to five commended entries, the winner will join the four-day Los Angeles workshop programme in June 2027 and receive a US$2,500 cash prize and Sony Digital Imaging equipment.
Category winners will be chosen by the judging panel. Winners of the Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation and Student categories will be revealed at the gala ceremony in Los Angeles on 10 June 2027, while the Future Format winner and commended filmmakers will be announced in April 2027.
The deadline for entries to the 2027 Awards is 15 December 2026 at 7:00am (CST). Further information and submission details are available at sonyfuturefilmmakerawards.com.
